AMCOS is an association of music publishers and writers, established in 1979 to provide a centralised means of licensing the reproduction of musical works for a variety of purposes.
Mechanical royalties are legally payable when music is reproduced. This includes music recorded on tape or CD, music made available for digital download or internet use, music used in a film soundtrack, mobile phone ringtones or produced as sheet music.
While APRA and AMCOS are independent companies, since 1 July 1997, APRA has managed the affairs of AMCOS and the organisations staff and offices have been amalgamated.
