Broadcasters are one of APRA’s and AMCOS’s main clients. They not only broadcast music, they also reproduce it on a regular basis, and so usually require two types of licences to cover these different uses.
APRA|AMCOS’ broadcast licences authorise the broadcast of all works in our repertoire on the broadcaster’s service. In return for the licence, broadcasters pay a licence fee and usually need to provide us with music returns and cue sheets to identify the music they have broadcast.
Our reproduction licences authorise the reproduction of music in certain circumstances. This is a recognition of the volume of music that a broadcaster uses in the programming it makes and the nature of the production: ie. regular nightly current affairs, sport programming or magazine style shows. For example, these licences do not cover the use of commissioned works. There are also limitations on the use of commercially or published released music (e.g. under the licence, commercially released music cannot be reproduced in an advertisement).
Our broadcast and reproduction licences are tailored according to the type of broadcaster - we offer separate licence schemes for Community broadcasters and for Commercial broadcasters, for example.
